4th Quarter 2023 Report

Highlights:

  • 2 men entered the Transition Program this quarter. We currently have 7 men in the program.  1 man coming next quarter.
  • 11 men Baptized at Lawtey CI.
  • Sexual Idolatry completed at Lawtey CI – 15 attending.  Doy Moyer’s Mind Your King starting.
  • Conflict Resolution class at Marion CI started – 10 – 20 attending.  Men in the class are leaders in the Faith and Character Based Dorm.

Summary of Activities:

 Lawtey Correctional

  • Mentoring and Small Group Bible Study on Thursday night; conducted with other men from the Middleburg congregation. Inmate attendance is 70-90 with 4-6 mentors participating.  I am currently working with a group of about 20 men.  We are studying Bible questions as they arise.
  • Worship Service on Sunday afternoon conducted with members from Middleburg and other congregations.  There is singing, praying, taking of the Lord’s Supper and Preaching/Teaching; I rotate preaching with other brothers; Christian inmates occasionally bring lessons and regularly participate in other parts of the service.  We have around 40 – 60 in attendance.
  • One on one Bible Study and Counseling every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.  Typically, between 15-17 individual studies each week.

Liberty CI

  • Monthly worship service on the 4th Sunday of each month. One on one visits most months on a Tuesday with 7 to 10 men.

Marion CI

  • Tuesday morning class each week. I am now teaching exclusively the leaders of the faith-based dorms there.  I am hoping this access will give me a constant flow of new men to teach.  About 20 men are attending.  We are studying Conflict Resolution.
  • One on one Bible Study and Counseling every other Tuesday afternoon with about 5 men.

RMC West

  • Bible study each Wednesday night – between 20 and 40 in attendance. I teach one class per month.  Greg Whipple and Carlton McPeak cover the other nights.

 Spiritual Advisor Visits at RMC West, Columbia Main, etc.

  • “Spiritual Advisor” Visits with members of the church and other men I have worked with at other institutions that are interested in the transition program or need encouragement.

Bible Correspondence Courses

  • Due to DOC changes in mail policy, bible correspondence courses have become much more difficult to send into inmates.  We continue to press the state administration to make changes to this policy.

 Transition House

  • 7 men are currently living at the transition houses.
  • Sunday afternoon counseling with men in the program.
  • Monday night Bible class at transition house currently being taught by me.  We are doing a study based on the Chosen TV series about the life of Jesus.  We are currently on season 2.

Funding

  • RMC West Unit class is going well.  1 Wednesday night per month – between 30 and 80 in attendance. Greg Whipple and Carlton McPeak cover the other 3 nights each month.

  • Worship Service on Sunday afternoon conducted with members from Middleburg.  There is singing, praying, taking of the Lord’s Supper and Preaching/Teaching; I rotate preaching with other brothers; Christian inmates occasionally bring lessons and regularly participate in other parts of the service.  Inmate attendance has now been increased to 36.  We are having around 30.
  • One-on-one Bible Study and Counseling every Friday.
  • Victim Impact Class started on Thursday mornings.  About 35 inmates attending.

  • Lawtey CI closed because of COVID early in
  • Monthly Sunday Service resumes at Liberty
  • 4 Baptized at Lawtey 

Summary of Activities:

Lawtey Correctional

  • Lawtey CI has been on medical lockdown because of COVID since early They had not experienced a single case during the whole pandemic until December. Over a third of the camp has tested positive for COVID. We have been told the camp is close to re-opening but have not been allowed to return as of early February.

RMC West

  • Opened back to volunteers in November, but my commitment to Marion has prevented me from being able to teach there.

Liberty CI

  • After being restricted to volunteers for 8 months, Liberty has re-opened. We did our first Sunday service there in November and I was able to do one on one visits.

Marion CI

  • Marion re-opened at the end of November, and I was able to start my Tuesday The response has been very good. I am having about 20 to 30 men every week and I am doing one on one visits there in the afternoon. The Chaplain is very cooperative and has already asked me to teach an additional class.

RMC Work Camp

  • Keith Ward, a brother from Gainesville, has been back doing a Sunday evening service there for a few months. I have started attending the service on the 4th Sunday evening of each month after the service at Liberty CI to encourage Keith and the men there. Keith may even let me preach.

  • Mentoring and Small Group Bible Study on Thursday night; conducted with other men from several congregations in the area. Inmate attendance is 25-32 with 4-6 mentors participating.  I am currently working with a group of about 6 men.  We are studying Acts.
  • Worship Service on Sunday afternoon conducted with members from several local congregations.  There is singing, praying, taking of the Lord’s Supper and Preaching/Teaching; I rotate preaching with other brothers; Christian inmates occasionally bring lessons and regularly participate in other parts of the service.  Inmate attendance has now been increased to 36.  We are having around 30.
  • One-on-one Bible Study and Counseling every Thursday and Friday.
